Condo Collapse Near Miami Prompts Frantic Search for Survivors
According to South American officials and news reports, relatives, and some South American officials, Paraguay’s first Lady and an Argentine couple with a 6-year old daughter were not found. Euclides Acevedo from Paraguay, Paraguay’s foreign minister, has identified the missing relatives in President Mario Abdo Benitez’s household as Luis Pettengill and Sophia Lopez Moreira, a cattle rancher. Sophia Lopez Moreira is a sister to Silvana Lopez Moreira. An employee of the family and the couple’s three children are also missing, he said.
Lisandro Sabanes (a spokeswoman for Argentina’s foreign Ministry) stated that at the most, nine Argentines believed had been in the building were still missing.
Claudio Bonnefoy of Chile is another man who has been missing. Pascale Bonnefoy, his daughter, said that he was also among the missing. Ms. Bonnefoy, a Chilean journalist who writes for The New York Times, said her father, who is 85, lives in an apartment on the side of the building that collapsed. Maria Obias Bonnefoy, was his wife.
“Their apartment is in the rubble,” Ms. Bonnefoy said.
An entire crowd was seen gazing in awe at the rubble on the beach next to the structure’s remains.
Raysa Rodriguez, 59, who lives in the part of the building that remained standing, said she was awakened by what she thought was an earthquake. She then escaped down an emergency stairwell and off a second-floor balcony onto a rescue ladder.
“When I opened that door, I was like, “There’s no building,”” Ms. Rodriguez stated. She’s lived in the building’s ninth-floor unit for almost twenty years. “They won’t be capable of finding those people.”
Mr. Cohen, a lawyer, was rescued by crane. He claimed that his wife and he had been asleep when he heard something resembling a thunderclap. It looked like it had been hit with a missile, according to the couple who opened the doors to their unit.
Cohen stated that he is always happy to be alive, but that he’s even happier today.
